Campephilus magellanicus (King)

Length 44 – 46 cms.

Male black plumage with blue sheen. Head with crest, throat and neck all red. Two white borders in the back due to the base of the internal barbs of the primaries and the secondaries being white.

Female similar to the male, but all grey and only the feathers around the base of the beak red.
